What Are the Best Safety Precautions for Floods?

February 10th, 2020

Flood Damaged Street

Windsor has been struck by major floods twice in recent years – in 2016 and 2017. It’s crucial for homeowners to protect their homes and families by taking precautions against floods. The sooner you take action, the safer you’ll be.

Prepare Your Home for Flood Waters

If flooding seems likely, construct temporary barriers to keep flood waters out of your home. Sandbags are an effective way to prevent water flow. Don’t forget to seal basement walls with waterproofing compounds to stop moisture infiltration from below.

Have an Emergency Plan in Place

Do you plan to leave or ride out the flood? As roads flood, it becomes harder to safely leave a community, so make this decision early. Know where you are going and what route to take. Have three days’ worth of essentials packed for each family member.

Stock Up If You Plan to Remain at Home

Standing flood waters can take a week or more to recede, so planning ahead is a must. Stock up on water and staple foods early if you plan to remain in place. It’s a wise idea to have several coolers or ice boxes to supplement your refrigerator, which may lose power.

Charge Up Essentials and Disconnect Appliances

Before a flood, charge up cell phone batteries and reusable batteries. Assemble all potential light sources, including handheld torches and candles. Disconnect unneeded electrical appliances and move all electrical or electronic devices to high shelves.

Stay Alert to Weather Updates

Electricity and internet service may fail in the course of a flood. Use a crank-operated emergency radio or a battery-operated radio to ensure you can stay updated. Follow any official advisories. Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if told to do so.

Do Not Venture Outside in a Flood

Once flood conditions set in, the outside can be extremely dangerous. It is hard to judge the level of standing water, and low-lying areas can be prone to flash flooding. Flood waters may be polluted or conceal hazards. Do not venture outside by foot or by car.

Clean and Disinfect Exposed Objects

Any object that touched flood water or was immersed in it should be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly before use. Wear appropriate gear, including gloves and eye protection, when handling these items – they may be coated in dangerous chemicals or sewage.
