Changing your furnace’s filter regularly is one of the most important things you can do to keep your system in good shape. It’s also easy to do – even if you’re not usually the handy type. Follow our guide to change your furnace filter on your own in just a few minutes.
Why Replace Your Furnace Filter?
Operating your furnace with a dirty filter will impede its air flow and reduce its efficiency. It may even cause the system to overheat and shut down, especially if it’s working hard to heat your home during the winter. Your home’s air quality will also be lower, circulating dust, pollen, and other harmful allergens that could impact your family’s health.
Filters that are 1 to 2 inches thick should be replaced once per year depending on pets, dust etc. Filters that are 5 to 6 inches thick last longer, often needing to be replaced just once a year.
Reusable filters exist, but they aren’t standard issue. Check to make sure yours is reusable before attempting to clean it. If it is, use gentle soap and water to remove any built-up grime, then let it dry before placing it back in your filter housing using the steps below.
Steps to Change Your Furnace Filter
- Make sure your furnace is turned off before you begin. If it’s been running recently, give it a few minutes to cool down before beginning this process.
- Look for the filter housing. On most models, it’s located between the furnace itself and the air intake. If you can’t find it, check your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website. There will usually be a diagram available to show you where it is.
- Open the housing door and carefully remove the old filter.
- Check the size and shape of the old filter. If you have a new one on hand, compare the two to make sure they match. If not, take note of the specifications so you can buy one that will fit. Most of the time, you’ll find this information printed on the filter frame. If not, measure the filter yourself with a standard ruler or measuring tape.
- Place your new filter in the housing and close the door. Make sure it’s securely shut before turning the furnace on and also make sure your filter is replaced with the arrows pointing in.
- Make a note on your calendar or phone app to remind yourself when the next filter change is due.
